ML9—Par 31

Get those big guns ready!!! Hal and I tested out the preliminary set up for the ML9. We figure par to be 31. Hal shot a 32 and I a 33!! What does the ML stand for?!?!? MILE LONG!!! Rough estimate is 5,256′!!! Would need one of those rolling measurers to get accurate distance. Here is what holes we shot. Still room for a little tweaking. 1 to 2, 2B to 3, Hill to 4, behind trees(group of trees beyond cable south of hole 4) to 5, 6 to 8, 8 to 1, 2 to 5, 5 to 6(Mandatory to go left of trees-will be drop zone if not make mando), 3 to 9. Only OB will be perimeter of course. Shortest hole is roughly 430′(8 to 1) and longest 785′(1 to 2). Took us about an hour to play. Maybe give it a test run with more players on Wed. night?!?!?

Hal Horn Wins His First Monthly

After finishing in second place a whooping six times out of twelve monthlies, Hal finally finished on top today with a round of two under, 79.  This first place finish only widens the gap between Hal and those chasing him in the Championship points.  He now leads the Championship race by eight points.  He will be tough to catch by year end with only four more tournaments to be played.

Hal Horn at a Wednesday eventBy the way, this monthly was Hal’s one year anniversary playing in the Chainracker’s monthlies.  After not being able to break par all last season, Hal has finished under par in three of the monthlies this year.  His game continues to improve each month with plenty of practice.  Hal is one of the longest drivers in the club and his putts are becoming a more solid part of his game.

Second place this month went to George Kimmerlein who also shoot a 79, but was edged out by his handicap.  George was under par after finishing both the medium and long tees.  Jack Kaufusi, Del Silva and Marie Finn finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively.  John Kimball shot the best non-handicap round of that day at 74, but his punishing ADD 9 handicap put him out of the running.

Wed. Night Play – Tee Time 6 pm

clock6:00 pm is the new tee time for Wed night play. What a time we had tonight. Played doubles with all 5 groups together. The highlight was Dan’s tee shots on hole 2. With the wind coming from the west, he snaked both drives around the left of the trees and had them fall back to the pin. Poor Dan did not reach the pin the first time around and fell 6 feet short. Only a 396′ drive. He made up for it the second time around, going 30′ past the basket!! A 430′ drive!!! We will miss watching your awesome drives Dan. Joining the Air Force is a proud and honorable thing to do for our country.

We had a newbie out tonight. Jim’s nephew Jake is in town from Fresno and he showed that he has excellent potential for future growth in the sport. You’ll have to go check out the Woodward Legacy course in your area.

There was enough wind to produce many drives and putts that did not stay on line.  Always fun to watch a disc in the wind, be it good or bad. See all who show next week…Let me just mention one more person. Sure looks like Austin’s game has improved immensely. Drives are getting spot on target and he made some 30 to 50 foot putts. Keep it up Austin. And all you golfers Keep ‘em flyin’

Wed. Night Ace Pot Back to Zero!!–POD next week

Geoff, Austin, and Jason had the pleasure of watching John’s left handed skipper float softly into #5 basket. The best birdie of the evening goes to Geoff, for his second shot on long 8!! Drilled his forehand right of the basket and nailed a goose on hits hind quarters!! Best par save goes to Jason. Both Jason and Geoff thru OB on 6 and Jason threw his flutter disc on a 60′ rope to save par!! Would it be better to change the tee time to 6:30?? Sure would be nice to get more players out there. Next week is Play One Disc night.  Keep ‘em flyin’

John Kimball Crushes Own Course Record

disc_and_bones_260x195John left the competition in the dust at today’s monthly tournament with an amazing round of 68 for 27 holes.  That’s an AVERAGE of 2.5 per hole!  And would you be surprised to know that John actually had two bogeys on his record setting round?  Yep, that means he needed a whooping 15 birdies to shot the only 27-hole round ever scored below 70 on the Elk Grove course.

Even with the handicap of adding 7 strokes, John was still 3 strokes ahead of Hal Horn’s second place round of 78 (with handicaps).  Hal had his first sub-par round during a monthly tournament.  John and Hal were followed by Nate, Rob and Jim in third, fourth and fifth places, respectively.

It was an awesome day for golf.  Thirteen players showed up for the July monthly tournament.  Three players were new and establishing handicaps, while ten members competed for the cash and points.  No aces today, so the ace pool is now $108.

Possible Conflict, An Option, Your Thoughts?

Conflict-I have a Disc Golf Workshop from 10 to 12 on the day of our July Monthly. Possible, because it may be cancelled due to lack of participants. Will not know until Thurs. the 9th if it is a go or not. Option-At least 3 of us tee off at 7:30, so I can be done before the workshop. Your thoughts?? Keep ‘em flyin’

Last Night’s POD

Nine players showed up for our first Play One Disc night. We started out playing doubles with 8 players. Our 9th showed up on 2nd hole and became the wing man for various groups throughout play. The coordinator, (me, tee-hee) was making rules up on the fly (another tee-hee), regarding our 9th player. We know how we’re going to deal with the odd-man out at next gathering. To wordy for me to splain it here. Bascically, extra player will be helping any of the non-leading groups that are playing. Will help only one group per hole. Steven and John did not get, or need, any help last night, as they did quite well in shooting a -12. Our next POD play will be July 22nd. For future reference, the 4th Wednesday of every month will be our night for POD. Keep ‘em flyin’
